1 Carat Lab-Grown Diamonds

The 1 carat diamond is the benchmark every other size is measured against: about 6.5 mm across as a round brilliant, 8.2 × 5.7 mm as an oval, and a centre stone that is unmistakable on any hand. Every stone on this page weighs 1.00–1.19 ct, is independently graded by IGI or GIA, and is shown with its live, VAT-inclusive price. Compare shapes below, see any stone true to size on a hand, and set it in a ring with our gemologists when you are ready.

How big is a 1 carat diamond?

A 1 ct round brilliant measures about 6.5 mm in diameter. One carat is 0.2 g, or 100 points, and because carat is weight rather than width, the face-up size of a 1 ct stone depends on its shape and on how deeply it is cut: two 1 ct rounds can differ by a few tenths of a millimetre, and an elongated shape spreads the same weight over a longer outline. The table gives the typical face-up measurements of the 1 carat stones in our catalogue (median length × width, mm).

ShapeTypical size of a 1 ct stone
Round6.5 mm
Oval8.2 × 5.7 mm
Pear8.9 × 5.7 mm
Marquise10.5 × 5.3 mm
Cushion (elongated)7.1 × 5.3 mm
Emerald6.9 × 4.8 mm
Radiant7.2 × 5.0 mm
Heart7.0 × 6.3 mm
Princess5.5 mm square
Asscher5.6 mm square

On the hand, a 6.5 mm round covers close to 40% of the width of an average finger, which is why the 1 ct is the size most people picture when they think of an engagement ring. Open any product and use the "see it true to size" tool to see it on your own hand next to a 0.7 ct and a 1.5 ct.

1 carat diamond rings

A 1 ct stone carries almost any setting. The six-prong solitaire on a 2 mm band is the archetype; a cathedral setting lifts the stone and shows more of its profile; a halo turns it into a statement; a bezel gives a modern, protected look that suits active hands. In elongated shapes the 1 ct is where proportions really start to show: a 1 ct oval at 8.2 mm long makes the finger look slimmer, a pear at 8.9 mm even more so, and an emerald cut gives a calm, architectural look with long, mirror-like flashes. See round 1 carat diamonds for the classic, or cushion 1 carat diamonds for a softer outline. Every diamond is loose and ready to set: choose "Set this stone in a ring" on the product page or build the whole piece in the ring configurator.

How much does a 1 carat lab-grown diamond cost?

Prices on this page are live and include VAT, the grading report and insured delivery. The 1.00 ct mark is a threshold in diamond pricing: a stone that reaches it costs noticeably more per carat than one just below it, which is why our 0.9 carat diamonds are worth a look if the number itself matters less than the look. Above the threshold, colour, clarity and cut decide the price, and at 6.5 mm both colour and inclusions are easier to see than in a smaller stone. VS2 is the sensible clarity floor for an eye-clean 1 ct; G–H colour looks white in yellow or rose gold, while F and above stays colourless against platinum and white gold. Our three tiers, Classic (G–H, SI), Reserve (F, VS) and Signature (D–E, VVS), map onto that choice. Lab-grown is what puts a certified 1 ct within reach: it typically costs 60–80% less than a mined diamond of the same grade, with the same hardness, fire and lifetime. Read how they are grown and graded in our guide to lab-grown diamonds.

Choosing a 1 carat diamond

  • Cut: Excellent only. At this size a poor cut shows as a dull centre or a visible dark ring; filter for Excellent cut, polish and symmetry.
  • Clarity: VS2 or better. Check the certificate plot and our photograph for anything near the centre of the table.
  • Colour by metal. Near-colourless VS stones for warm metals, colourless VS stones or colourless VVS stones for platinum and white gold.
  • Proportions in fancy shapes. For ovals and cushions, look at the length-to-width ratio on the product page; around 1.3–1.4 is the classic oval, and a well-cut stone should show no dark "bow-tie" across its middle.

Compare nearby sizes

A 0.7 carat diamond is about 5.8 mm as a round; a 1.2 carat diamond and a 1.5 carat diamond are the next steps up, and a 2 carat diamond is about 8.1 mm. Browse all sizes, shapes and grades together in the diamond search, or see our engagement rings.

1 carat diamonds: frequently asked questions

How many mm is a 1 carat diamond?

About 6.5 mm in diameter as a round brilliant. A 1 ct oval measures roughly 8.2 × 5.7 mm, a pear 8.9 × 5.7 mm, an emerald cut 6.9 × 4.8 mm and a princess cut 5.5 mm square. Exact measurements are on each certificate and product page.

How much does a 1 carat lab-grown diamond cost?

It depends on colour, clarity and cut, and the range on this page reflects that; every price shown is live and includes VAT, the certificate and insured shipping. As a rule, a lab-grown 1 ct costs 60–80% less than a mined 1 ct of the same grade.

Is a 1 carat diamond big enough for an engagement ring?

Yes. It is the reference engagement size: at 6.5 mm a round covers close to 40% of an average finger's width and is visible from across a room. If you want more spread, choose an oval or pear; if you want more restraint, a bezel setting keeps it discreet.

Does the 1 carat collection include stones over 1.00 ct?

Yes. Stones here weigh between 1.00 and 1.19 ct. The exact weight is stated on every product and on the certificate.

Is a lab-grown 1 carat diamond real?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond has the same crystal structure, hardness and brilliance as a mined one; only its origin differs. Every stone here is graded by IGI or GIA, its report states that it is laboratory-grown, and it is inspected in Sweden before it ships.

Questions, answered

What 1 carat lab-grown diamonds do you offer?

Our 1 carat lab-grown diamonds selection features 246 certified lab-grown diamonds in stock right now, each independently graded by IGI or GIA and hand-inspected in Sweden before it ships.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond — chemically, physically and optically identical to a mined one. The only difference is origin: it is grown above ground in a matter of weeks instead of mined over millennia, typically 60–80% less than the mined equivalent.

How are your diamonds certified?

Every stone is independently graded by IGI or GIA and ships with its certificate. You can verify the report number directly on the lab's public website.

Are these diamonds conflict-free?

Yes. Because they are lab-grown, our diamonds are entirely conflict-free and traceable, with a far lower environmental footprint than mined stones.

Can I return a diamond or set it in a ring?

Yes. Every order includes free insured shipping and 30-day returns. Each stone is loose and ready to set — choose "Set this stone in a ring" on any product and our gemologists help you build the setting.
