What VVS clarity means
VVS1 and VVS2 sit directly below internally flawless on the clarity scale. The inclusions are minute, often a single pinpoint, and difficult to locate even with a loupe; VVS1 is the cleaner of the two. Every stone at this grade is eye-clean by a wide margin, so what you are buying is the certificate and the confidence that goes with it rather than a visible difference.
The grade makes most sense in two situations: very large stones, where any inclusion has more room to be seen, and step cuts such as emerald and asscher, whose broad, open facets leave nothing to hide behind. In a brilliant cut under two carats, the practical gap between VVS and VS is close to nothing.
Why pair VVS clarity with near-colorless?
Because clarity and colour are graded independently, and they are not equally visible. Inclusions are a physical feature of the stone; colour at the near-colorless end is a comparison against master stones under laboratory light. Combining a high clarity grade with a G or H colour buys the part of the report that can matter and saves on the part that does not show once the stone is set. Is VVS clarity worth the money?
In a large stone or a step cut, it buys real peace of mind. In a brilliant cut under two carats, a VS stone looks identical to the eye and costs less. Judge it on the stone you are actually buying, and use the certificate plot and our photograph.
What is the difference between VVS1 and VVS2?
VVS1 inclusions are smaller or positioned where they are harder to see under magnification. Both are far beyond eye-clean; VVS2 is the better value.
Is VVS the same as flawless?
No. Flawless and internally flawless are the two grades above VVS. A VVS stone has minute inclusions that a grader can find with a loupe, though you will never see them.
Do near-colorless VVS diamonds look yellow?
No. G and H face up white in every common setting. The distinction from a colorless D–F stone is made face-down under laboratory light, not on the hand.
